This is offered in grades 7-8. The program designed to help students prepare for and succeed in high school, college and the university setting. Students commit themselves to improvement, goal setting and preparation for college. CR offers a rigorous program of instruction in academic "survival skills" and college level entry skills. The program teaches students how to study, read for content, take notes, write well and manage time. Students participate in collaborative study groups or tutorials led by tutors who use skillful questioning to bring students to a higher level of understanding.
HIRE allows teachers and students to address individual academic needs at each teachers’ designated time during block period.
The study skills class is taught by the intervention coordinator in a small instructional environment. The curriculum of the study skills class focuses on developing organization skills, teaching test preparation strategies, helping students understand how they learn, and working on individual goals as determined by the intervention coordinator and the students’ teachers.
Prerequisites: Students are identified by their teachers as needing additional academic support.
Students work with the intervention coordinator and/or another support program for several
weeks and are only enrolled if sufficient progress is not made. Placement into the course is
subject to the recommendation of the SST team.
